I’m in Crisis—Where Do I Start? | East County San Diego Resource Guide

If You’re Overwhelmed, You’re Not Alone

When life becomes unstable—whether due to housing insecurity, العنف المنزلي, addiction, health challenges, or lack of food—it can feel like everything is happening at once.

The hardest question is often not “What do I do?”
It’s: “What kind of help do I even need?”

Many people in East County San Diego don’t need just one service—they need direction. The challenge is that the system is complex, and it’s not always clear where to start.

This guide is designed to help you understand how to identify the right type of support and connect to the resources that may be available to you.

You don’t have to figure everything out at once

If you’re in crisis, you do not need to:

  • Know the name of a program
  • Know which agency to call
  • Know what you qualify for

What you do need is a starting point.

Most support systems are built around a few basic needs:

  • Safety
  • Housing stability
  • Food access
  • Health and mental well-being
  • Support for recovery from trauma or addiction

You don’t have to sort this out alone.

Step 1: Identify what feels most urgent right now

Start by asking yourself:

Am I safe where I am?

If you feel unsafe due to:

  • العنف المنزلي
  • Threats or harm
  • Immediate danger at home

→This is a safety-first situation

Do I have a safe place to stay tonight?

If you are:

  • Sleeping in your car
  • Facing eviction
  • Staying somewhere temporarily without stability

→ This is a housing crisis situation ←

Do I have access to basic needs?

If you are struggling with:

  • Food insecurity
  • No income for essentials
  • Loss of transportation or stability

→ This is a basic needs crisis situation ←

Am I experiencing health concerns or substance use challenges?

If you are:

  • Experiencing mental health distress
  • Dealing with addiction or recovery challenges
  • Unable to access healthcare

→ This is a health support situation ←

Step 2: Understand that these needs often overlap

Crisis rarely fits into one category.

For example:

  • Housing instability often connects to financial strain
  • Trauma can affect health, safety, and decision-making
  • Food insecurity can impact physical and mental health

That’s why navigating help can feel overwhelming—because you may need more than one type of support at the same time.

Step 3: You don’t need the perfect answer—you need connection

One of the biggest barriers people face is thinking:

“I don’t know where to go, so I can’t go anywhere.”

But support systems are designed to work through connection, not perfection.

Organizations like Crisis House exist to help people:

  • Understand what they’re experiencing
  • Identify possible resources
  • Get connected to the right type of support in the community

Not every organization provides direct services—but many help you find the ones that do.

Step 4: What “getting connected to resources” actually means

When someone helps connect you to services, it may include:

  • Listening to your situation without judgment
  • Helping identify what category of need you’re facing
  • Referring you to local programs or agencies
  • Helping reduce confusion about next steps

It is not about doing everything in one place—it’s about helping you move in the right direction.

You are not expected to navigate this alone

Crisis situations can make everything feel urgent, emotional, and unclear at the same time. But getting help does not require having all the answers first.

It only requires one step: reaching out for direction.
