That is not a failure on their part. Housing instability builds slowly and privately, and asking for help takes courage. Assistance programs and community funds are often able to help close a gap of a few hundred dollars or one month of rent. If you have noticed a neighbor, coworker, friend, or family member showing several of these signs, a few things help more than others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask directly and privately. &#8220;How are things going with the house?&#8221; opens a door that &#8220;let me know if you need anything&#8221; usually does not. Offer something specific rather than open-ended, like a grocery run, gas money, or watching the kids during a job interview. Share resources without making it a verdict, because passing along the 2-1-1 number is easier to accept than an offer of charity.
