The harmful stereotype that men should always be strong, tough, and unemotional can result in their victimhood being minimized or dismissed. Furthermore, they may be reluctant to report abuse due to fear of ridicule, disbelief, or stigmatization, or lack of awareness about available help.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block22\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<div id=\"viewer-8m8k2501\" class=\"H0BMW qw9d2 _5TXqj _39sR0\"><span class=\"GkipB\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block23\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-zhrfp502\" class=\"H0BMW qw9d2 _5TXqj t077n _39sR0\"><span class=\"GkipB\">This dismissal is more than an injustice to the individual victims; it perpetuates <a class=\"DAP0T CATC8\" href=\"\/es\/blog\/the-cycle-of-abuse-and-how-to-break-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-hook=\"WebLink\">the harmful cycle of domestic violence.<\/a>\u00a0To challenge and change these stereotypes, we need to redefine societal expectations about masculinity and raise awareness that men can be, and are, victims of domestic violence.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block24\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<div id=\"viewer-vg4xf506\" class=\"H0BMW qw9d2 _5TXqj _39sR0\"><span class=\"GkipB\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block25\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<h3 id=\"viewer-e4ubu507\" class=\"VV7sS nhBpC _5TXqj t077n _39sR0\"><span class=\"_4jp5f\">The Reality of Domestic Violence Against Men<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block26\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<div id=\"viewer-o0h9q509\" class=\"H0BMW qw9d2 _5TXqj _39sR0\"><span class=\"GkipB\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block27\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-6vbtv510\" class=\"H0BMW qw9d2 _5TXqj t077n _39sR0\"><span class=\"GkipB\">When we think of domestic violence, the stereotypical image that comes to mind is physical abuse. However, domestic violence extends beyond physical harm. It can take on various forms, such as emotional, psychological, <a class=\"DAP0T CATC8\" href=\"\/es\/blog\/what-is-financial-abuse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-hook=\"WebLink\">financiera,<\/a>\u00a0or sexual abuse. These types of abuse can be just as destructive and long-lasting as physical violence.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block28\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<div id=\"viewer-hjm5k514\" class=\"H0BMW qw9d2 _5TXqj _39sR0\"><span class=\"GkipB\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block29\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-ei4aq515\" class=\"H0BMW qw9d2 _5TXqj t077n _39sR0\"><span class=\"GkipB\">Male victims may face threats, manipulation, stalking, forced isolation, and other forms of control and dominance by their partners. Also, men are equally likely to experience <a class=\"DAP0T CATC8\" href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/news\/press\/releases\/2011\/04\/intimate-terrorism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-hook=\"WebLink\">poor mental health outcomes<\/a>\u00a0such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety as a consequence of enduring domestic violence.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block30\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<div id=\"viewer-xu90g519\" class=\"H0BMW qw9d2 _5TXqj _39sR0\"><span class=\"GkipB\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block31\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<h3 id=\"viewer-ju11b520\" class=\"VV7sS nhBpC _5TXqj t077n _39sR0\"><span class=\"_4jp5f\">Challenging Stereotypes and Providing Support for Male Victims<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block32\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<div id=\"viewer-ewnt8522\" class=\"H0BMW qw9d2 _5TXqj _39sR0\"><span class=\"GkipB\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block33\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-ub7dy523\" class=\"H0BMW qw9d2 _5TXqj t077n _39sR0\"><span class=\"GkipB\">Breaking down these harmful stereotypes and opening up support for male victims of domestic violence is a complex and time-intensive undertaking. However, there are many steps we can take to advance progress and to make a difference in our local communities. Ways to help include:<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block34\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<div id=\"viewer-epfe5525\" class=\"H0BMW qw9d2 _5TXqj _39sR0\"><span class=\"GkipB\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block35\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<ul class=\"SQ97S t077n\">\n<li class=\"ke--X _5TXqj\" dir=\"auto\">\n<div>\n<p id=\"viewer-c5hun528\" class=\"H0BMW qw9d2 _5TXqj t077n _39sR0\"><span class=\"GkipB\">Promoting a broader understanding of domestic violence:\u00a0Male victims should be included in conversations and campaigns related to domestic violence. Their experiences should not be taken lightly or seen as a joke; instead, they should be validated and vocalized.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ke--X _5TXqj\" dir=\"auto\">\n<div>\n<p id=\"viewer-lq8mj532\" class=\"H0BMW qw9d2 _5TXqj t077n _39sR0\"><span class=\"GkipB\">Challenging male stereotypes and societal expectations:\u00a0It\u2019s essential to break down harmful stereotypes about masculinity, showing that it&#8217;s not a weakness for men to seek help or express their emotions.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ke--X _5TXqj\" dir=\"auto\">\n<div>\n<p id=\"viewer-w3yzf536\" class=\"H0BMW qw9d2 _5TXqj t077n _39sR0\"><span class=\"GkipB\">Implementing educational programs:\u00a0Educational programs should be implemented in schools, workplaces, and communities to raise awareness about domestic violence against men. Policymakers, law enforcement, social workers, and mental health professionals can also be equipped with appropriate training to help them recognize and support male victims.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ke--X _5TXqj\" dir=\"auto\">\n<div>\n<p id=\"viewer-yfm79540\" class=\"H0BMW qw9d2 _5TXqj t077n _39sR0\"><span class=\"GkipB\">Holding media to higher standards:\u00a0Balanced representation of male victims in news reports, movies, and television can help break down stereotypes and increase societal understanding of the issue.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ke--X _5TXqj\" dir=\"auto\">\n<div>\n<p id=\"viewer-lctg2544\" class=\"H0BMW qw9d2 _5TXqj t077n _39sR0\"><span class=\"GkipB\">Developing (and sharing about) resources for male victims of domestic violence:\u00a0While there are numerous resources for female victims of domestic violence, support for men is often lacking. The development of more shelters, hotlines, and counseling services that can cater to male victims are of great importance. Such initiatives should be more widely promoted, so that men experiencing violence can know where to go for help.
