Domestic violence (DV) is an extremely broad concept that encompasses a wide variety of violence and abuse. DV has long been an urgent problem in the US, but in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, DV has only worsened. This is because of the harmful impacts of the pandemic and stay-at-home orders on instances of DV. Pandemic stressors and situational difficulties not only increased the occurrence of DV in households where it was already happening, but also gave rise to DV where it hadn\u2019t developed before.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block19\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<div id=\"viewer-fn7lk\" class=\"bbl5c dkFHG _8UBmS _-7CKp\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"zKS-7\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block20\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-37tuh\" class=\"bbl5c dkFHG _8UBmS _-7CKp\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"zKS-7\">In a Blue Shield of California Foundation <a class=\"L-ZXL QZImc\" href=\"https:\/\/blueshieldcafoundation.org\/sites\/default\/files\/webinars\/PerryUndem-Experiences-with-COVID-19-Equity-Domestic-Violence-Full-Data-Deck.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-hook=\"WebLink\"><u>survey<\/u><\/a> regarding experiences of <strong>domestic violence and COVID-19<\/strong>, 3 in 10 Californians said there has been more tension in their romantic relationships since the beginning of the pandemic. Of those, nearly half described tensions as becoming \u201cunhealthy,\u201d \u201cpotentially abusive,\u201d or \u201cunsafe.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block21\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<div id=\"viewer-32v1j\" class=\"bbl5c dkFHG _8UBmS _-7CKp\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"zKS-7\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block22\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-2jhsg\" class=\"bbl5c dkFHG _8UBmS _-7CKp\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"zKS-7\">This uptick in violence was <a class=\"L-ZXL QZImc\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7195322\/#:~:text=Data%20from%20US%20police%20departments%20provide%20some%20early%20insight%20into%20the%20effect%20COVID%2D19%20has%20had%20on%20DV%20in%20some%20regions.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-hook=\"WebLink\"><u>observed around the US<\/u><\/a> as people were forced to isolate themselves to prevent the spread of disease. Following school closures and stay-at-home orders in Portland, Oregon, \u201cthe Portland Police Bureau recorded a 22% increase in arrests related to DV compared to prior weeks.\u201d In Jefferson County Alabama, stay-at-home orders were followed by a 27% increase in DV calls compared to that time the previous year.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block23\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<div id=\"viewer-7qlr0\" class=\"bbl5c dkFHG _8UBmS _-7CKp\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"zKS-7\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block24\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-7mq9o\" class=\"bbl5c dkFHG _8UBmS _-7CKp\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"zKS-7\">These increases came as the result of multiple factors that made <strong>domestic violence during COVID-19<\/strong> more frequent. Some of the key contributing factors to this rise in prevalence were social isolation, increased stress levels, and strain on resources. Here\u2019s how each of those pandemic consequences heightened the risk for DV.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block25\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<div id=\"viewer-28dvk\" class=\"bbl5c dkFHG _8UBmS _-7CKp\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"zKS-7\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block26\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-d8p7v\" class=\"bbl5c dkFHG _8UBmS _-7CKp\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"zKS-7\"><strong>Social Isolation<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block27\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<div id=\"viewer-c7eoc\" class=\"bbl5c dkFHG _8UBmS _-7CKp\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"zKS-7\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block28\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-92j2h\" class=\"bbl5c dkFHG _8UBmS _-7CKp\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"zKS-7\">Social support is one of the most crucial factors in helping people suffering from DV. Friends, family, coworkers, and more can be essential links to the world outside of the abuser\u2019s control. They can provide support, notice red flags, and connect their endangered loved ones or acquaintances with life-giving resources. During the pandemic, stay-at-home orders effectively cut off these support systems, leaving victims and abusers isolated in a fraught environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block29\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<div id=\"viewer-bsf95\" class=\"bbl5c dkFHG _8UBmS _-7CKp\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"zKS-7\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block30\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-8a01f\" class=\"bbl5c dkFHG _8UBmS _-7CKp\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"zKS-7\">A <a class=\"L-ZXL QZImc\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7386835\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-hook=\"WebLink\"><u>estudiar<\/u><\/a> of the impact of COVID-19 on DV found that \u201cextended stays\u201d were one of the factors driving up the incidence rate, as long-term confinement with others has been shown to heighten stress and destabilize relationships.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block31\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<div id=\"viewer-fqqg3\" class=\"bbl5c dkFHG _8UBmS _-7CKp\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"zKS-7\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block32\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-3tmns\" class=\"bbl5c dkFHG _8UBmS _-7CKp\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"zKS-7\">The pandemic also affected individuals\u2019 economic freedom. As people were laid off and lost not only income but accompanying insurance, this forced some people to be further dependent on their abusers. The pandemic increased stress for everyone, in many different ways, therefore driving a higher rate of DV. Pandemic stressors resulted from things like medical concerns, grief, anxiety and depression, and economic strain. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block37\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<div id=\"viewer-5u182\" class=\"bbl5c dkFHG _8UBmS _-7CKp\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"zKS-7\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block38\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-7e3eq\" class=\"bbl5c dkFHG _8UBmS _-7CKp\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"zKS-7\">A review of <a class=\"L-ZXL QZImc\" href=\"https:\/\/counciloncj.org\/impact-report-covid-19-and-domestic-violence-trends\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-hook=\"WebLink\"><u>DV trends during COVID-19<\/u><\/a> found that \u201clockdowns and pandemic-related economic impacts likely exacerbated factors typically associated with domestic violence, such as increased male unemployment, stress associated with childcare and homeschooling, and increased financial insecurity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block39\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<div id=\"viewer-f7r8\" class=\"bbl5c dkFHG _8UBmS _-7CKp\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"zKS-7\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block40\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-f330v\" class=\"bbl5c dkFHG _8UBmS _-7CKp\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"zKS-7\"><strong>Strain on Resources<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block41\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<div id=\"viewer-dahn4\" class=\"bbl5c dkFHG _8UBmS _-7CKp\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"zKS-7\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block42\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-deuud\" class=\"bbl5c dkFHG _8UBmS _-7CKp\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"zKS-7\">Finally, the COVID-19 pandemic also affected the resources that are essential to addressing DV. Like the highly publicized and widely felt strain on the shipping industry and many others, support systems like government programs and nonprofit organizations faced extreme strain during the pandemic. A 2020 <a class=\"L-ZXL QZImc\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2590291120300589#:~:text=Because%20of%20social,increasing%20functional%20isolation.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-hook=\"WebLink\"><u>report<\/u><\/a> on DV in the early stages of the pandemic summarized the problem as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block43\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<div id=\"viewer-afafv\" class=\"bbl5c dkFHG _8UBmS _-7CKp\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"zKS-7\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block44\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-fv4lt\" class=\"bbl5c dkFHG _8UBmS _-7CKp\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"zKS-7\">\u201cBecause of social distancing measures, shelters and other response services\u2026 are not operating in the same manner and, in some cases, are operating over capacity or not at all. This reduces access to DV resources at a time when individuals are already socially isolated, increasing functional isolation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block45\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<div id=\"viewer-590u4\" class=\"bbl5c dkFHG _8UBmS _-7CKp\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"zKS-7\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block46\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-228jf\" class=\"bbl5c dkFHG _8UBmS _-7CKp\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"zKS-7\">In a world reeling from the impacts of COVID-19 and its lingering consequences, it is crucial that DV is highlighted and addressed moving forward. Now more than ever, it\u2019s essential to support the systems preventing and responding to DV.
